Q Raking Leaves
  Sep 12, 2008

Would you consider this good exercise for a person over fifty?

A Response from Mr. Stewart

Dear Exercise Fanatic!

Exercise in any way can be helpful to good health, still we all need to discuss our individual capacity for exercise with our physicians. What seems like easy work could be over stressful for an individual, of any age with a heart problem.

Raking leaves? Some folks may quickly laugh off as non-exercise, however, there is a great deal of strenuous work going on with raking leaves. The strain of "excessive" cardio-vascular exercise can be damaging. "Excessive" needs to be assessed for each individual and that person's needs. What is easy for one 56 year old may not be the same for another.

So, although "Raking Leaves" may seem on the surface as non-exercise, we should have learned by the time we are 50 that there are no easy answers to anything in life- always more questions.

Plan an annual check-up with your physician. Write down all questions prior to your meeting. Ask questions about exercise and potential problems.

Raking leaves may or may not turn you into a Chelsea Boy, but if you get the OK from your doctor, it could make you feel great.
