Q Coming out to my doctor
  Mar 12, 2008

Since I am still sexually active, I think it is important that my doctor know I am gay. Still, I don't know how to tell him. Can you help me?

A Response from Mr. Stewart

Feeling absolutely comfortable with your medical provider will help you to be absolutely honest with yourself and then with your provider. If you fear being honest about yourself and your needs with your current provider, then what is your reason for continuing with this person?

The doctor needs to understand and appreciate the specific health needs and problems faced by a gay man, a lesbian or a transgendered person. Not every doctor has this expertise-or wants to have it. Doctors are individuals affected by their beliefs and cultures. Make certain that your doctor accepts your sexual identity without negative judgement. If you are ashamed to be yourself with your doctor, then its time you think about what you need and seek a good provider with whom you can be honest.

Peace and Good, Ken
