Q Numbers of LGBT seniors living alone
  Jun 23, 2008

Can you estimate what percentage of senior LGBTs (ie over 65) are living alone? Many thanks

A Response from Dr. Kooden

Hi, I am glad that you realized that all the figures have to be estimates though they can be fairly accurate. These figures come from the SAGE Needs Assessment. In the general population, it is accepted that one half of people over 65 live alone; the percentage rises for the LGBT seniors to two thirds. In NYC, there are 1,300,000 people over 65 of whom 75,000 are LGBT which means 50,000 live alone. Nationally, it is estimated that there are 2,800,000 LGBT seniors over 65 which means 1,100,000 live alone. If you have further questions, ask away.
