Q.

services in the bronx

My senior gay Dad lives in the Bronx and is afraid to get help with cleaning his apartment, painting etc. because he fears the obvious gay materials in his home could lead to mistreatment or violence. Are there resources in the Bronx I might contact to find gay friendly help for him?

HI, I feel that your best bet is to call the SAGE office at 212 741-2247 and tell them your story. They would be in a better position to make any possible referrals. Does he have any friends who utilize a cleaning person or service? He can start by asking his network of friends. If he is isolated, he can also call a local senior center and pose the question to them. Is he mobille enough to come to SAGE offices or get involved in any of the SAGE groups at the community center in Manhattan? Elder abuse is a serious issue but the chances for its occurrence are lessened if you are actively involved in his life and whomever he has coming into his apartment knows of your involvement.
